American Idol: Be Gone

The television show, American Idol is destroying music stars of our generation. Music is a form of art, and a form of expression. Music stars of the pre-Idol era were raw, and original. Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Jack White, and The Dave Matthews Band are all examples of musical acts that are perfect in their imperfections. There is a great chance that not one of the previously mentioned acts would make it through the early rounds of American Idol, but they are all widely considered as some of the most influential musicians of their respective eras. American Idol produces perfectly tuned, pitched, and postured musicians that all turn out roughly the same. Music has become synthesized and inorganic, and I believe American Idol is a leading cause of that amongst other things.
In my opinion, music is something that all humans can relate to. It is a universal language that touches us in a different way than anything else. The reason for this is the songwriters and musicians performing are raw, vulnerable, and display the pure emotions they felt when writing their song. Often times their voice will be slightly off key, or their guitar will be a little out of tune, but that’s what people relate to, and it’s what music fans come together to rejoice over. A new sound, or way of doing something that has been done for so long in songwriting.

Don’t get me wrong, there are a few musicians who have avoided the vortex of American Idol artists and those who mimic them, but they are few and far between compared to the music legends of the past. Let’s take out the perfectionists and refill the music industry with what we are all, imperfect.

  1. I completely agree with your opinion on American Idol. Music should be art, just like it always has been. They do not make an "American Idol" type show for aspiring painters, why musicians? I enjoy listening to music for pleasure, not to rate one person versus another. To me, there is no such thing as perfection in any form of art due to how subjective the topic is. I also liked your comparison to artists like Jack White and Dave Matthews. I know for a fact that they would not win American Idol, yet they are very respected artists.

  2. Lets not forget about one key fact: American Idol's goal as a TV show is to entertain the majority of Americans. Showcasing good music is on the agenda too, but first and foremost, American Idol is concerned with entertaining American society. That doesn't necessarily mean the person with the best voice/talent will entertain them the most. A lot of the entertainment value revolves around a particular person's storyline, appearance, etc. Also, I'd be willing to bet that most people who watch American Idol nowadays aren't even interested in the music itself.

    1. I could not agree more with you. American Idol is a show meant to entertain the people of America. The sad fact is the publicity of the show, and its winners/other successful contestants, affect the music industry significantly. As Idol has produced more successful pop-stars, it has diluted the quality of mainstream music. I won't argue that it's not great for entertainment, because it very obviously is. But they are sacrificing the purity of good music for entertainment. Nowadays it's more about having the right image, singing about things that people will agree with, as well as things that are flashy and fun. This is why you have to applaud artists such as Lorde for breaking that barrier. Surprisingly, Lady Gaga is another example of talented musician and performer (as weird as she is). I get Idol is for entertainment, but at the same time it is making all pop music sound the same. Looking at you: Kelly Clarkson, David Archuleta, Daughtry, Jordan Sparks, Adam Lambert, etc.

  3. I could not agree more. People listen to music all the time for different reason. Wether it may be to have something to relate to, or something to relax to, music has talked this universal language for hundreds of years. What makes music so perfect to some, is it's imperfections. When we sit down and truly listen to music, we look for something to help us or something to have us thinking about life; it is a time to reflect.
